Ludhiana is a city that lives to eat, and while it’s better known nationally for its tandoors, it also has a pure vegetarian food scene deep enough to fill a guide on its own. Every place on this list is vegetarian — from century-old halwais and Gill Road thali houses to chaat corners, kulcha stalls, and dessert cafés.
Thirty spots, grouped by what they do best, with a map link for each.
Thali Houses and Old-School Dhabas
These are the backbone of Ludhiana’s vegetarian eating — rich, comforting North Indian food, generous portions, fast turnover.
1. Rishi Vegetarian Dhaba (N.K.)
Gill Road, near Campa Cola Chowk, Miller Ganj. One of the best-known names in the city, and busy accordingly — the dal makhani and shahi paneer are what people come for. Note that there are several “Rishi” dhabas clustered together on this stretch plus a separate Dugri branch, so check which one you’re heading to. View on Google Maps
2. Gyan Vaishnav Dhaba
Link Road, near Gill Chowk. A neighbour to the Rishi cluster and a long-standing local favourite, known for lachha parathas and paneer bhurji. View on Google Maps
3. Bansi Vaishno Dhaba
A bustling, quick-service spot where the vegetarian thali is the order to make. View on Google Maps
4. Express Vegetarian
A pure vegetarian restaurant geared toward a proper sit-down lunch rather than a quick bite. View on Google Maps
5. Kartar Vegetarian
A long-running favourite; malai kofta and stuffed naan are the picks here. View on Google Maps
6. A-One Vegetarian
Centrally located and dependable, with generous portions and rich gravies. View on Google Maps
7. Chawla Vegetarian Restaurant
A family diner that pairs spicier North Indian dishes with a comfortable, clean dining room. View on Google Maps
Street Corners, Chaat and Kulcha
Ludhiana’s street food is the real draw. Worth setting expectations, though: most of these are decades-old stalls and hole-in-the-wall shops where you eat standing or perched on a bench. The food is the point, not the seating.
8. Dalipe Di Puri
New Sarafa Bazar, Dal Bazar. A genuine institution for breakfast — hot pooris with spiced aloo sabzi, and lassi alongside. Expect a crowd, a cramped shopfront, and very little in the way of seating. View on Google Maps
9. S. Panna Singh Pakore Wala
Known well beyond Ludhiana for crisp paneer and mix-veg pakoras with a tangy chutney. View on Google Maps
10. Baba Hoshiarpuri Chat Bhandar
Government College Road, Civil Lines. A tikki specialist that locals have been going to for decades — the bread tikki and bhalla chaat are the standouts. Strictly a roadside operation. View on Google Maps
11. Shankar Churmur
BRS Nagar. Worth going for the churmur — tangy crushed chaat you won’t find on many menus. View on Google Maps
12. Bombay Batata Puri & Bhel Puri House
Mumbai street flavours transplanted to Punjab — bhel puri and sev puri done properly. View on Google Maps
13. Ashu Jammu Puri & Vegetarian Restaurant
Another breakfast stop, this one known for Jammu-style pooris and well-spiced chana. View on Google Maps
14. Patiala Shahi Nutri Kulcha
Field Ganj. Nutri kulcha is a Punjabi street staple — soya-based, buttery, heavily spiced — and this is a popular place to try it. View on Google Maps
15. Kulcha Kulture
Krishna Mandir Road, Model Town Extension. Tandoor-baked kulchas with a range of fillings — aloo, mix veg, paneer, and a chur chur version that gets ordered most. More of a sit-down café than a stall. View on Google Maps
16. Pandit Ji Ke Chhole Kulche
A classic street vendor: soft kulchas, rustic well-spiced chole. View on Google Maps
17. Be Desi
For heavy, unapologetic Punjabi chole bhature with a lassi on the side. View on Google Maps
Sweets, South Indian and Sit-Down Dining
For a proper meal out, a mithai run, or regional vegetarian food.
18. Sagar Ratna
The reliable choice for pure vegetarian South Indian in Ludhiana — dosas, idli, filter coffee. Part of the national chain. View on Google Maps
19. Madras Leaf
Wave Mall. South Indian in a smarter setting, if you want the food without the queue and clatter. View on Google Maps
20. Bikanervala
A large, hygienic all-rounder — street-style chaat, thalis, and a sweets counter under one roof. Useful when a group can’t agree. View on Google Maps
21. Bikano Chat Cafe
Civil Lines. The same group as Bikanervala in a smaller café format, leaning toward chaat and chole bhature. Worth knowing they’re related rather than two independent finds. View on Google Maps
22. Shankar Dass Halwai (Since 1928)
Lalu Mal Street, Kucha Beni Ram, Chaura Bazar. Coming up on a hundred years old and still the reference point for mithai in the old city — gulab jamun, milk cake, and hot kesar milk in winter. There’s also a Dugri branch that does poori and bhature for breakfast. View on Google Maps
23. Gautam’s O Dine
Sarabha Nagar Road, D-Block. A vegetarian multi-cuisine restaurant that covers Indian, Italian and Indo-Chinese — a safe bet for family meals and celebrations. View on Google Maps
24. Basant
A local ice cream brand with several outlets across the city, some pairing the ice cream with a full vegetarian menu. The kulfi and mixed dry fruit scoops are what regulars order. View on Google Maps
Cafés, Fast Food and Dessert Stops
Evening hangouts, quick bites, and somewhere to end the night.
25. Cream Cafe
BRS Nagar. An easy-going café with vegetarian global plates and a dessert menu worth saving room for. View on Google Maps
26. Hutea – The Tea Hut
Sat Paul Mittal Road, B-Block, Sarabha Nagar. A busy, well-liked tea café — masala chai, vada pav, matar kulcha, and Indo-Chinese snacks, with cushion seating that makes it easy to linger. View on Google Maps
27. RC Food Junction
Model Town. Purely vegetarian fast food — burgers, pizzas, Indo-Chinese. View on Google Maps
28. Manjit Ice Cream Parlour
Kochar Market, New Model Town. Three generations in and still made in-house — the kulfi with falooda and rabri is the thing to order, and the dry fruit scoop has a following of its own. There’s a second, smaller shop near Bharat Nagar Chowk. View on Google Maps
29. Natural 2
Civil Lines. Fresh fruit ice creams, shakes, and quick vegetarian snacks — a standard evening stop. View on Google Maps
30. The Cream Way
Model Town. A dessert and beverage café for thick shakes and sweet treats. View on Google Maps
Eating Your Way Across the City
The list clusters into four rough areas, which makes a food crawl easy to plan:
- Old city (Chaura Bazar, Dal Bazar): Dalipe Di Puri for breakfast, Shankar Dass Halwai for sweets afterwards — they’re a few minutes apart.
- Gill Road and Gill Chowk: the Rishi and Gyan dhaba cluster, best at lunch.
- Sarabha Nagar and BRS Nagar: Gautam’s O Dine, Hutea, Cream Cafe and Shankar Churmur, good for an evening.
- Model Town and Civil Lines: Kulcha Kulture, Manjit, Natural 2, The Cream Way, Baba Hoshiarpuri.
Several of the street-food spots close by early evening, while the ice cream parlours run late — worth sequencing in that order.
